Antique Engines Displayed In Tyler

REVVING UP: Rows of antique tractors will be showcased this weekend at the Lone Star Antique Tractor and Engine Association’s tractor show.

Seasoned engines will be purring Saturday in Tyler as the Lone Star Antique Tractor and Engine Association gears up for their annual tractor show.

"If you like mechanical things, (these tractors) have an all together different sound than the tractors have nowadays," Engine Association member and volunteer, Joe Hoffman said.

East Texans can check out the vehicles in the Tractor Supply parking lot on SSW Loop 323 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For more information contact the Engine Association President, Charles Parmley, by sending an e-mail to cjparmley@tyler.net.

SPINNING THEIR WHEELS: Various machines are scheduled for display at Saturday’s tractor show.

"(Participants) can expect to see different kinds of tractors like John Deere, Farmall, Allis Chambers, Case and Ford- all kinds of restored tractors," Hoffman said. "We also have old, old engines used to provide power to make ice cream and make cornmeal out of corn, to grind it."

Association officials said displays of farm tractors and antique gas powered stationary engines are sure to impress even the mechanically challenged.

The gurus just encourage any rookies to keep an open mind when viewing the restored fruits of their labor.

"It's just really enjoyable," Hoffman said, who will showing off two of his own antiques on Saturday.

"I've got two tractors and I am in the process of restoring them," he said. "(One) I got was completely parched. I paid $25 for it. But, when I get through with it, it will be worth $4,000."

Don't worry if you can't make it to this weekend's festivities.
On Sept. 8, the Engine Association will be having a "bigger and better" show in Whitehouse, Hoffman said.
Along with additional displays and games, an auction will be a part of the event.
"We (will also) have a tractor pull and a kiddy (peddle tractor) pull to see which one can pull the sled the furthest," Hoffman said.
Proceeds from the auction will go towards funding scholarships the association provides for college students.
"We hope to raise enough money this year for three or four (scholarships)," said Hoffman.

You didn't need big muscles to win a strength competition in Whitehouse today. You needed a good engine.   The Lone Star Antique Tractor and Engine Association held its sixth annual Tractor Pull Competition today.

Participants say it's not about the driver, but the condition the tractor is in. Antique machines were on display as well, like ice cream makers and 1940 case thresher.

"This is us," said President of Lone Star Antique Tractor and Engine Association Charles Parmley.  "All of us. This country was founded on agricultural principles and Democracy went with it, but we all come from people that worked the land. Thanks goodness we don't have to do that anymore."

The Lone Star Antique Tractor and Engine Association began in 2000 to preserve machinery important to our nation's farming industry.
